Assistive Technology Services [Yes, I am more than a general tech geek!]

After working more than 10 years in information technology I decided that it "wasn't enough" and returned to graduate school to earn a master's degree in speech and language pathology (SLP).   I was, and still am, a minority in the world of SLP in that I have an in-depth knowledge of and feel for all sorts of technology.  I am both a clinician and a technician.  This led me to start my SLP career as an assistive technology (AT) specialist at a school for special needs children in New York state.

I was responsible for both AT and augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) evaluation and therapy with developmentally-delayed or disabled students ranging in age from 5 to 21 years.   Device and software feature matching to maximize each student's academic, communication, and/or ADL (activities of daily living) skills was essential to this role.  This included assessment to determine the best interface between the student and the technology based upon their individual physical and cognitive capabilities.

Training faculty, staff, and family members or caregivers for the specific technology or technologies was also of great importance.   It does no good to come up with sophisticated solutions to complicated problems that no one knows how to use after they arrive!
